In plain English

What is vehicle-to-home (V2H)?

Your EV is already a large battery. Bidirectional charging lets that battery help power your home — not just receive a charge. When the grid is up, you charge as usual. When the grid goes down (and your setup supports it), stored energy can flow back to keep lights, fridge, Wi‑Fi, and other essential circuits running.

Normal charging

Electricity flows one way: grid → your electrical panel → charger → car battery.

Vehicle-to-home (V2H)

During an outage, compatible systems can reverse the flow: car battery → charger → selected home circuits — safely isolated from the grid.

What happens in an outage

1

The grid goes down

A storm, utility issue, or rolling blackout cuts power to your neighborhood.

2

The system detects it

A Powershare Gateway or similar transfer equipment senses the outage and disconnects your home from the grid so power cannot backfeed utility lines.

3

Your EV supplies backup power

Energy flows from your plugged-in vehicle through a bidirectional charger to the circuits you planned for backup — often within about a minute, with no generator noise or fumes.

4

Grid returns — charging resumes

When utility power is restored, the system switches back automatically and normal charging continues.

Tesla Powershare — how Tesla describes V2H

Tesla’s Powershare technology is their vehicle-to-home solution. On a fully charged Cybertruck, Tesla states Powershare Home Backup can deliver about 11.5 kW of continuous power — enough for many homes to run essentials for three days or more, depending on what you power and your battery level. Homes without Powerwall typically need a Tesla Universal Wall Connector plus a Powershare Gateway. Homes with Powerwall may use a different path; Tesla continues to expand software and hardware compatibility — we confirm what works for your property on site.

What you typically need

  • A bidirectional-capable electric vehicle (model, trim, and software all matter)
  • A compatible home charger — e.g. Tesla Universal Wall Connector for Powershare setups
  • Gateway or transfer switch hardware so backup power is delivered safely
  • Licensed C-10 installation, permits, load planning, and utility coordination — handled by evNation

V2H is meant for outage backup — not for everyday energy arbitrage unless your utility program explicitly allows it. Backup time depends on vehicle charge, which loads you run, and your install design.
